Mane monday: DIY Hair Mask

It's been a minute since I've posted some beauty tips and tricks so I am going to start a weekly post all about taking care of your hair through all the seasons, dye jobs and hair cuts you may encounter! Now I don't have the thickest, shiniest or even most cooperative hair, but after working in a hair salon on and off for many years and perfecting my own methods I have picked up some helpful tips for anyone that isn't bald.

To start off this Mane Monday series I introduce to you my weekly DIY hair mask. Now there are a ton of easy hair masks out there, this one addresses most of my hair needs. Like I said this is a weekly mask and depending on my schedule I make it up to twice a week. As someone who dyes their hair monthly and puts their hair through the ringer it helps keep it soft, healthy and aids hair growth. If your like me, and you cut your hair then a week later wish you had mermaid locks anything that helps my hair grow a little faster is essential!

A little back ground about my own hair, before I get into the mask. I have normal to fine hair,  that gets greasy depending on the season. Unfortunately, I have greys and yeah it kinda sucks. Texture wise its a nice curly, wavy , more times then not frizzy lions mane. My hair doesn't get weighed down too much by products as long as I don't go crazy!

Warning! This maybe heavy for those of you who have finer hair so you may want to opt out of the castor oil step.

Ingredients:
Aloe $1.30  - Aloe support scalp health and acts as a conditioner. It leaves your hair shiny and smooth.
castor oil $10 (more or less depending on the size) - castor oil aids in hair growth, I only apply this to the scalp! Also, throw some on your eyebrow and eyelashes to help grow those caterpillar brows!
vitamin E oil $6 - vitamin e oil helps condition dry skin and hair.
coconut oil $6 - coconut oil helps condition and thicken your hair and can help with the growing process.

Everything but the aloe will last you for multiple masks. The vitamin E and castor oil depending on how often you use it could last 6 months or longer. I'm no mathematician so I can't break it down to cost of mask, but it ruffly ends up being about $1.50> a mask. Also, each batch is about two masks, it starts to smell more salad bowl your second time around, but still good! I'd say the mixture lasts about a week.

Mask time:
First, I cut and scoop out all the aloe meat. Throw it in a blender and add a large spoonful of coconut oil and a few squirts of Vitamin E oil to a blender. Then give it a blend. Once the mixture is blended I let it sit, the coconut oil will still be a bit chunky in the mix, but will melt with the heat of your hands. During the blending process the aloe gets a little foamy so I let it rest for about 5-10 minutes before applying it to the hair.

I cut the flat side off the aloe and then scoop it out with a spoon.
A generous spoonful of coconut oil.

This is right after I blended it all together. See how foamy it looks, that's why I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes before application.

Application time:
This is where the castor oil comes in to play. Castor oil can help hair grow faster and thicker. I use a color brush to apply it to the roots. WARNING, AGAIN!! Castor oil is very thick and if not washed out properly can give you some greasy a$$ hair, again you have been warned. After my scalp is covered, not smothered just covered. This isn't waffle house. I massage it into the scalp and then apply the aloe mixture. I use an old brush and brush it through my hair to make sure my hair is fully saturated. The aloe can be hard to blend into the hair so brushing it through is the best way for me to make sure all my little hairs are covered. After my head is a tropical salad I leave it in for at least 30 minutes and if I have the time an hour. So grab a book if you are into that or pull up your latest binge worthy Netflix show and relax.

Shower time:
When you wash it out remember you're using a lot of oils so you may need to shampoo twice to get all out. I still condition, this may seem excessive since I've been sitting around with mask on my hair for an hour, but because of the two shampoos it's just a nice way to further condition my mane. When it's all said and done my hair feels soft and thick. I also follow it up with a detangler and smoothing serum. PRO TIP:  I always use a cotton t-shirt to dry my hair. It's much gentler on your hair, so take out that old band tee and it's officially your new hair towel. Your hair will thank you trust me!
