Quebec City food baby

It's been a minute since my last post, but I just got back from a long weekend to Canada and have a ton of great food posts coming up!

I don't know what I was thinking going to Canada for Spring break, but what the hell, the food is good and the streets are magical. Even when it's cold and windy :) The first leg of our trip was in Quebec City. All we did was eat, drink and see a river. I'd say Quebec City alone is perfect for a 2 day trip. Now if your fond of skiing or hiking, you may want to stay longer. This city is close to a ton of outdoor activities, for those who are ever so inclined. But, if your like me and not into it 2-3 days is the perfect amount of time to explore this romantic city.

La Buche
This was one of the best restaurants we went to on our vacation. It had an interesting menu and everything was authentic Quebec cuisine. This was the one restaurant we went to where I felt we got a real idea of what French Canadian food was all about. I don't think we could get anything like this anywhere and I loved that! I hate when you go somewhere and you feel like you could get something similar back at home, but La Buche was nothing we could have gotten anywhere but Canada.  We went with the Rabbit Wings, Meat Pie and the richest French Onion soup with bone marrow I've ever had in my life. My arteries did close a little after this meal, but it was totally worth it!

All I have to say is MAPLE SYRUP Pork Rinds. This amazing creation was their complementary amuse bouche!!! I could have honestly eaten a bucket of just this, they were the best thing I've ever had and am shedding a tear just thinking of them. It's one of those things you think you can recreate,  but know you will ruin it so you just don't do it!

Polished off the pork rinds pretty quickly and I'm not ashamed. Tom looked at the menu for like a minute and there were like 2 left. Sorry not sorry.
Round 2 amuse bouche pickled beets and mustard pickles!

This was the meat pie, topped with buttery puff pastry. Also, the salad has this sweet dressing that went well in contrast with all the fat.
This was so intense it was almost hard to eat. I'm glad we shared it cause i think I would have had a heart attack if I actually ate the whole thing. If you order it, get a slice or two of bread.
Best for last, the rabbit wings. Tom was obsessed. They do have a gamey flavor, but the sauce was amazing!

 1608 Bar à vin & fromage
Located inside Fairmont Le Château Frontenac this wine bar was romantic and chic. We really felt like we were living the high life going here. It's very small, and gets crowded, so get there early! They specialize in cocktails and it was just fun to watch the bartenders make tons of different drinks, both on and off the menu. As for grub; charcuterie board, charcuterie board, charcuterie board!!! The three cheese and meat plate was perfect for a big starter. We got something small later in the evening, but this was a perfect meal to split.

I mean look at this board! Figs, grapes, three cheeses, 4 meats, spreads, pickles, peppers and more!

 Snack Bar
Your old town Poutine Stop! Yes, we went there twice, it is perfectly located near many bars and is simple and perfect for soaking up all the beers you will inevitably drink! We didn't get fancy, and just ordered the original poutine, and a petite was big enough to share.  Are there other poutine places in the city yes, but are they all open late night and off a main street, no. Convenience was the mother of necessity with this one.

 Just beautiful!

 Chez Bou Lay
Off  Rue Saint-Joseph Est this bistro had amazing breads. We did get a pastry, but their sandwiches were the best bang for your buck. We got a sandwich one morning and it was perfect to carry it around and take a few bites while we explored the city when ever we got hungry. I called it my purse sandwich. Warning though, you do need to have cash or a Canadian debit card. They did not take credit cards!

 Le Croquembouche
Also located off of Rue Saint-Joseph Est, I dubbed this the pastry street. Le Croquembouche had everything one may want, chocolates, pastries, bread and coffee. We went the pastry route, I honestly don't remember what we got, but they were both amazing. They aren't opened on Mondays though, so we couldn't do a round 2, but this is a perfect one stop shop for all your gluten needs.

They rain out of chocolate almond croissants, we were sad for a moment, but got over it quickly.

I'm telling you they had EVERY THING!

 Tim Hortons
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to go to Canada and not get a Tim Hortons Donut . In all honesty it's basically Dunkin, but their coffee was amazing and I loved the sprinkles they used!

Tom went with the dunking method and was very happy!

Maple Syrup Snow Taffy
You can find this amazing treat all over Quebec and Montreal. At first I thought it might be a bit much, cold maple syrup. But, boy was I wrong. It almost had a cream soda flavor and melts fast, so eat it quick. That shouldn't be a problem cause it's delicious!

 Queues De Castor
The Beaver Tail. Where to begin. This amazing treat was another Canadian treasure. I like to keep it simple and went with the cinnamon sugar, but it also had salted butter on it and well it was a perfect mid day treat. There are more decadent options, but for my first time it seemed only right to go simple. I am pretty sure you can get them with poutine on top and honestly this would be my next choice. I'm not really into super sweet stuff and tend to go more savory and this fried dough would be perfect covered in fries and gravy! Like most things we got, they were pretty big and 1 was perfect for sharing, but I also like to share almost all meals so please don't listen to me. Get a whole one, go into a sugar coma and live in the blissful fried dough heaven that is a Beaver Tail!

Cafe La Maison Smith
I think this is a Canadian chain coffee shop, but as long as it's not a Starbucks I'm always game! Now I was boring and got an americano , but Tom got a Maple Latte and well it was AMAZING! Not too sweet, and a perfect mix of caffeine and sugar. We will be recreating these at home cause it was so good! Even if you don't go here to get one, just get a maple latte when on your visit. It is life changing, trust me!
