24 hours in Philly... aka sandwichfest

When you only have 24 hours in a city, it can be a food lovers nightmare picking just a few spots to hit up in your short lived trip. This happened to be a sandwich focused adventure, but at the end of the post I added a few other spots we love, but didn't have time to get to!

Saad's Halal Resturant (University City)
This is Philly's best kept secrete! Located in west Philly off 45th street, this is a must stop if your in town. I discovered this gem when I was going to grad school and every time Tom came to visit we had to get the Chicken Maroosh sandwich. Similar to shawarma, it's just delicious. My favorite part are the pickles! They also have a killer cheese steak and I love their NO CELL PHONE Policy. I had to sneak my phone for the picture... your welcome!

Look at all those pickles!

2nd Story Brewing ( Old City)
On the other side of the city, you can find 2nd Story Brewing. Their beer was just okay, but when it's cold as hell it was a perfect pit stop to take a quick break and have a few beers. Their beer had a sweet aftertaste which kinda threw me off, but still decent. My favorite was the Always Sunny Gose.

Franklin Fountain (Old City)
Take a step into the past at Franklin Fountain. This ice cream shop is amazing and a must, even if it's 30 degrees outside. We weren't the only ones who felt this way cause it was packed. I got the Broken Hearts sundae, but would suggest just going with a scoop and topping, they call it the College Ice.  Also, get adventurous and go with one of their more funky flavors. Tom got the Maple Blue Hubbard with maple walnuts and it was the best combo!

Yards Brewing Company
This weekend we went to a show at Franklin Music Hall and down the street was this glorious brewery! I went with an English Ale, the Brawler, perfect way to start the evening. Tom got the Grapefruit IPA , which went perfectly with the rich BUT delicious duck nachos. I wish we wanted to eat more cause their menu was pretty good! The charcuterie board would have been our next order for sure!  The duck nachos were perfect for splitting. I loved the radish and spicy red chilies, a great alternative to the more traditional jalapenos! This place gets crowded on the weekends, so go early or be prepared to stand at the bar for a minute while you wait! Also, so of their seats are cafeteria style, so if you don't like sitting with strangers you've been warned.

Sonny's Cheese steaks  ( Old City)
So Philly isn't a big late night eats spot, but if your in the old city Sonny's is open till 3am and has a pretty good steak. Honestly the fries were my favorite part... It's also just a fun people watching spot if your about town in the early morning! There are so many cheese steak spots, honestly a cheese steak is a cheese steak. Nothing mind blowing, but great for soaking up and libations you partook in earlier in the evening.

Reading Terminal: Dinic's, 4th Street Cookies & Old City Coffee
There are a TON of fucking options when visiting Reading Terminal. If you want to indulge in the Amish vendors DON'T go on Sunday cause none of them are open. We went Sunday morning and I know I didn't post it, but get an apple dumpling, they are life changing!

Dinic's is one of those famous philly staples. If you go early enough and are willing to eat a roast pork sandwich at 10 in the morning then you might be able to score a seat at the counter. If you go later in the day, be prepared to wait in line. Dno't worry there are tons of seats all around the terminal so there is always a spot to eat your tasty sandwich.

We went roast pork with all the toppings, I'd say forgo the pepper, greens and sharp provolone are perfect. Also, be warned it's sharp provolone so it has a funky flavor that your probably not used to compared to it's mild counter part.

Also, grab a cup of coffee to go with your cookies from 4th street! Americano and snicker-doodle is the best combo! There are two Old City Coffee vendors, so if the line is long at one try the other!

Some of my other favorite spots we didn't get to this trip:
