Smashing pumpkin... beers
It’s almost Halloween and I feel as though I’m late in the game when it comes to pumpkin beers, but after a trip to Total Wine and Wholefoods I picked up a few to taste test right before the Halloween weekend! Just like the Halloween section in Target it seemed to be almost all bought out, like all the crazy pumpkin beer drinkers cased the place and left only a few options to choose from. Those jerks!!!
To be frank, I’m not big into pumpkin beer. I drink one a year to check it off the list, but for blogging purposes I decided to do a little research to find the perfect pumpkin beer that I could drink more than just one.
First up Lancaster Baked Pumpkin Pie Ale
ABV: 7.5%
Smell: Little to no pumpkin smell, at first it made me happy to know there was not fake pumpkin flavoring!
Taste: Similar to an Oktoberfest, but with more spice. At first taste there was little to no pumpkin flavor, but after a few sips I started to taste the light pumpkin flavor.
Aftertaste: A little spice and pumpkin flavor but nothing overwhelming.
Overall: This is a pumpkin beer for someone who hates pumpkin! It’s a beer to get you into the fall spirit, without making you feel like your drinking a pumpkin spice latte.
Aleworks pumpkin
ABV: 7. something %
Smell: This beer had a slightly stronger pumpkin sent, but still nothing over powering or fake. Honestly, I sat just smelling this one for 5 minutes cause the pumpkin smell is so mild. It does have a slightly sweeter scent than Lancaster.
Taste: You taste the pumpkin right away and it’s more what I’m used to when drinking a pumpkin beer. Even though it has that pumpkin flavor, it’s not over powering. You can definitely taste the higher alcohol in this one. Over all pretty good choice if you only want to drink one or two since it’s kind of a stronger beer. It’s nothing your going to drink a ton of, but I guess pumpkin beer isn’t meant to drink in copious amount anyway.. or is it??
Aftertaste: It has a spicy after taste which some people like and some don’t, just be warned it’s there, That nutmeg flavor that some fall and winter beers have.
Overall: I think if I drank 2 or 3 of these I’d start singing , “ this is Halloween, this is Halloween, I am the pumpkin king!” This non-offensive and I’d say we’ll balanced ( I feel kinda douchie saying that but it is!!!) beer is another good choice for the fall. Wish I had a slice of pumpkin pie to eat with it!
Southern Tier Cold Pressed Coffee PumKING
ABV: 8.6%
Smell: The coffee comes through for sure on this one, with a slight pumpkin scent.
Taste: It's like the pumpkin spice latte of beer! This was by far my favorite, the coffee mellowed out the pumpkin flavor and it was just an overall good beer. Not too much coffee and not too much pumpkin!
Aftertaste: The coffee flavor had a stronger after taste with this one.
Overall: Again this was my favorite and one you should drink after your Thanksgiving meal to give you that extra pick me up as well as the morning after your Halloween festivities (hair of the dog I always say)!
