Peaks Island aka heaven
A 15 minute ferry ride from Portland Maine and you will find yourself in Peaks Island. This is the most magical place, it was so tranquil and calming. Most people staying on the island walk, bike or golf cart around and aside from the few restaurants and shops right when you get off the ferry the only thing there is nature an beach houses. Honestly, next time I go to Portland I plan on staying here! The ferry from downtown is only $7 round trip and runs basically every hour, so you can plan an short hour trip or longer! The island itself is only 4 miles round and is a great walk or bike ride to start your day. If your not the one to hop on a bike you can also rent a golf cart, but just a warning if you go on the weekend or later in the day they do sell out. This led us to the bike rental and I'm so glad it did.
Bikes were $10 for an hour or $20 for three hours and it includes the helmet and a map of the island. The brother and sister owners are really nice and can tell you all the good spots to go to when biking. It is a bit hilly so be prepared for a thigh workout! Our last day we went for a morning walk and it was the most perfect way to start the day!
There are three or four restaurants on the island and a small grocery market place, but I suggest bringing a little picnic to enjoy at one of the many look out spots! The coffee shop had great vanilla iced coffee, just a tip!
Like I said if you just look at the photos they speak for themselves. This island is beautiful and a MUST if your in the downtown Portland area.
*there are other islands that are further away, but some are private so you can't really explore*
Bike Rentals:
Perfect coffee spot to start your day! Right by the ferry.
There are two golf cart rentals, Mike's which is right by the ferry dock area and another one up the hill. So just keep walking :)
I wish we tried Milly's cause the food looked amazing! It's right next to Mike's golf cart rental.
