California PArt 1: Sweet treats
Sometimes you just need to have dessert first! California has the best donuts you will ever taste, its just a fact! But when one eats donuts one also needs a good cup of coffee. This first post is all about donuts, coffee and I threw in some other sweet treats you can get cavities from. Dentist need to work too!
Milk & Honey
But first coffee! This is my favorite coffee spot in southern California. Located in Huntington Beach, Milk & Honey has an amazing selection of coffee and tea drinks, but what has kept me coming back is their lavender Americano or iced lavender latte. In addition to this caffeinated flower I usually go with, I tried the Matcha tea latte (always a good choice) and we tried the Spanish Latte, which was like sweet cinnamon nectar, if I can remember correctly it was made with some condensed milk which took it to the next level! I have also had their acai bowl and it was amazing! On top of all of their amazing drinks and treats the atmosphere is so tranquil and when one is hyped up on coffee you need a tranquil space to counter act the caffeine. It's like the red bull vodka of coffee spots!
The green one is obviously the Matcha Tea, to the right of it is the Americano and the other heart is the Spanish Latte. |
To counter act the caffeine and sugar I went with a ginger shot. |
Randy's Donuts
This is an L.A staple. You have probably seen the giant donut in movies like Iron man and because they are located right by LAX is also my first and last stop when in L.A. Their menu has expanded since I was in town last, but my advise is only order from regular and deluxe menus. The fancy and premium style donuts should be saved for another location. With Randy's less is more and just stick with the classics. My personal favorite was the Crumb Cake donut, its almost like coffee cake and is a great way to start your trip!
Not the best photo, but there is a chocolate glazed, raspberry filled, the crumb cake is hidden under the parchment paper as well as the apple fritter. |

chocolate glazed cake, this was too rich for my blood! |
Universal Studios: Butter Beer
You can only get this delicious, diabetes inducing slushy at Universal Studios, so unless you go to the park your shit outta luck. BUT, if you do happen to get to Harry Potter World you need to try it! Maybe it was heat and standing in line all day that made this taste so good, but damn I loved it. This is also coming from a person who typically doesn't like to drink their calories. Go with the Slushy version, I had tried the soda version from a candy store years ago and was hesitant to try it at the park, but after eyeballing every person I walked by I caved and went for it. It's only $8 whats the harm I thought? After the first sip I was hooked! I was actually mad I hadn't gotten one earlier so I could have had another one. Anyway you should totally try one if you ever go to Universal it's worth the sugar crash you get later!
Horchata: anywhere
If you've never tried it, your missing out. If you've had it before, you know how good it is! What is it?? Basically it's a cinnamon, vanilla, milk drink. It has other ingredients, but those are just some of the key players. It's sweet and refreshing. I got this one from The Best Tacos in Ensenada.
House of Pies
So I watch Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and on one of the episodes Kristen Wigg and Jerry go to House of Pies. I had put it in my Yelp just for kicks and in route to another restaurant I passed by. Being so close I just had to get a piece of pie. Honestly, I only got the pie and with a name like that getting anything else seemed wrong. I went with the Strawberry Creme Pie and it was really good! Is it a must? That depends on how much you like pie, but it was really good.
I mean look at that strawberry, it's freaking huge! |
Primo's Donuts
Let me start this one off with the fact that in my opinion the buttermilk bar donut is the best. I can't get them at home so when ever I go to California or anywhere close the the west coast I usually eat as many of these donuts as possible. What is a buttermilk bar, you maybe asking yourself, its most similar to a cake dount and usually are only glazed. Primo's however has the best buttermilk bar I've every tried and they had multiple types as well. You could get a glazed, plain, cinnamon sugar, chocolate glazed and sea salt caramel. I am a purest and went with the regular glaze and it was heaven. If you've never tried one before go glazed then get funky. Their buttermilk bars aren't the only good thing on the menu either! I
also tried their cinnamon twist with crumb and their cake with chocolate
glaze and coconut.
You need Primo's in your life trust me!
Left to right; glazed twist, vanilla glazed twist, last the amazing cinnamon roll! They come with crumb on top and it was epic! |
McConnell's Ice cream
When exploring Grand Central Market I got to try McConnell's Ice cream. They have a ton of unique flavors like earl grey tea and short bread cookies, but I went with something more classic, mint chip and dark chocolate with chips. It's always nice when mint chip isn't bright green, and had great minty flavor. The dark chocolate almost had a coffee flavor which I thought was really good. If you can't get up to Santa Barbra you can at least get this delicious ice cream in downtown LA.
Vita Coffee
Honestly, the only reason I went here is to get a coffee after indulging in some amazing tiki drinks down the street, but I thought I would put this up here cause it was still good coffee and tea and there is an awesome thrift store across the street. It was a perfect way to walk off the booze, I wasn't driving so don't worry, just shopping with loose pockets!
